Life at Altum

I finished my A-levels in the summer of 2017 with no real idea of what career to pursue, and the prospect of university therefore seemed somewhat pointless. I knew I wanted to continue my studies and had friends who had recommended the finance industry, but in all honesty I was enjoying my summer and hesitant about full-time office work. Facing pressure from my mum to help with the rent, I decided to test the water and arrange some interviews.

In the end, it was the people at Altum and the environment they described that interested me, and as I met more members of the team I was sold. I joined in September 2017 and 4.5 years on, I consider myself lucky to be part of a great company that values its employees and client relationships.

Highlights from my perspective would be travelling to London to visit clients and trophy assets, receiving my Diploma from The Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland, and of course the social do’s – you can’t beat free beer.

They say the people that you work with are just as important as the job and I’d agree. Altum’s culture has always been at the forefront of the company, and it’s for that reason that I enjoy coming into work each day. The pool table helps!

It sounds cliché but wanting to better myself and improve my understanding of the industry.

When I joined Altum as a Trainee Administrator, I struggled with motivation as at the time I had no clear path, or knowledge of where I wanted to be. It was working with my line manager, Evan, that really changed this for me. Working closely with a truly motivated individual changed my perspective and so, at work, I’d say he does.

I am open with my ambition at Altum and speak regularly with senior members of staff about the future. My goal in 5 years is to have finished ACCA, and to be a Manager at Altum.
