Data Engineer, Technology – Cape Town

We have an opportunity in our Cape Town office for a Data Engineer to support our digitization plans across the Group and are looking for a technology enthusiast who is passionate about developing innovative solutions to facilitate the flow of data throughout our environment, and help Altum stand out as a leading business in our marketplace.
The role would suit someone with a high level of competence and familiarity of Microsoft’s Power Platform, with additional knowledge of API technologies, Office 365, Azure, and Copilot.
They will be responsible for designing, developing, testing and deploying solutions that meet the needs of our business and clients, therefore need to be organised and comfortable with dealing with their colleagues or third parties on technical matters.
Specifically, the role will focus on developing an operational ecosystem through the digitization and automation of business processes, creation and extension of system interfaces, and application of AI technologies.

Key responsibilities
- Responsible for designing, developing, testing and maintaining data interfaces to digitize and automate business operations. Including:Analyzing business requirements and translating them into functional and technical specifications for data interfaces within our Power Platform solutions.
- Developing interfaces between our core business systems (NavOne, Allvue, RiskScreen, SharePoint) to enable the seamless and automated transfer of data throughout the technology environment.
- Developing and configuring Power Apps, Power Automate flows, Power BI dashboards and reports, power virtual agents, and other components using best practices and standards to manage and support the management and interrogation of data.
- Testing, debugging, and troubleshooting data integration solutions and ensuring their quality, performance and security.
- Responsible for embedding and extending the use of AI technologies (including Copilot and/or bespoke AI solutions) to enhance data analysis capabilities.
- Identifying use cases to extend the use of AI within Altum to retrieve, analyse, and interrogate both structured and unstructured data in order to support business operations.
- Liaising with business stakeholders to identify opportunities to utilize AI to address / improve existing or arising requirements, and streamline business operations.
- Staying abreast of developments in AI to progress the functional capabilities, extend the business use cases, and improve the end user experience.
- Develop an approach for a unified data structure to support the ongoing management, reporting, and analysis of data within Altum Group.
- Promote data integrity through the use of automated data flows, designated data repositories, data ownership, and validation and reconciliation tools.
- Enhance and extend the current reporting suite within Power BI through consolidation and aggregation of data sources, in order to drive insights and analytics.
- Adhere to and uphold the governance and change management principles of Altum Technology and support the effective adoption of change within the business.
- Documenting, deploying, and managing system integration solutions in line with Altum’s change management framework.
- Liaise with third parties such as external IT service providers, software vendors, and other parties as required, to further integration opportunities or escalate issues as required.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
To be successful in this role, the candidate must have a good standard of oral and written English, along with the following skills and experience:
- Holding a minimum A-level (or equivalent) qualification in IT and/or computing related field, or currently working towards a suitable professional qualification.
- A university degree in computer science, information systems or a related field would be preferred.
- At least two years’ experience within a Technology department, ideally working with Microsoft Power Platform and Microsoft 365 tools.
- A deep understanding of Microsoft fundamentals with regard to identity management, security and strategy for the 365 product suite.
- Demonstrable experience of process automation, API technologies, and data analysis.
- Knowledge of data modeling, data analysis, data visualization and report design.
- Experience working within a formalized governance framework.
- A modern understanding and experience of information security practices.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Experience with NavOne or Allvue systems is a distinct advantage, but not a requirement.
